If you've heard of osteopathy but aren't sure what it actually involves or whether it could help you, here's a straightforward look.
Hands-on medicine from a physician
Osteopathic manual medicine is hands-on treatment delivered by a D.O. — a fully licensed physician trained to evaluate and treat the body's structure and movement directly. We can prescribe medications, order imaging, and manage complex medical conditions, but the manual treatment itself is the distinctive part of the work.
Common reasons people come in
Chronic neck, shoulder, and upper back pain
Low back pain (McGill Method available for chronic cases)
Posture
Headaches and migraines
TMJ and jaw dysfunction
Dental and bite issues
Old injuries that never fully resolved
Persistent tension or restricted mobility
A few things to know
I do not crack necks.
Medical care and osteopathic manual treatment are scheduled as separate appointments. The first osteopathic visit is an evaluation — a chance to see whether this approach is a fit for what you're working with.
Who it tends to help
Patients with persistent issues who want a non-pharmacologic, hands-on approach from a physician who can also see the broader medical picture.
